Young Female Smokers Provoke Health Concerns

The Thai Health Promotion Foundation has expressed concern about a worrying trend highlighted in a survey, namely the radical increase in smoking among Thai women, especially teenagers. The 2007 survey indicates that 6.4% of women were smokers, some less than 13.

The survey sample of 3,039 girls and women between 13 and 24 years-of-age, indicated 31.4% of those interviewed confessed to having first started smoking cigarettes before they even reached their teens. Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth) is extremely concerned about the findings and its implications: “We are afraid that the number of female smokers will rise in the future,” said Dr. Supakorn Buasai, ThaiHealth manager.

Meanwhile, an anti-smoking network is lobbying the government against the upcoming Asian Tobacco Trade Exhibition to be held a week hence from November 11-13 at the Impact Exhibition and Convention Centre in Nonthaburi. A news conference chaired by the Thai Network against ‘Tabinfo Asia 2009’ among interested parties and members of professional healthcare organisations was held to gather support for their campaign.

Their main means of protest is a petition which aims to collect 50,000 signatures to present to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, in the hopes that he may listen to the public outcry and act upon many if not all of the networks proposals. Presenting these new statistics, and the networks petition to the government is seen as a major step in encouraging the Thai populus to quit this fatal habit.
The network’s chairman, Dr. Hathai Chitanon, highlighted the fact that as a member of the World Health Organization (WHO), it is Thailand’ s duty to comply with the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). The network is also taking exception to ‘Tabinfo Asia 2009’s organisers use of the phrase ‘If You Win Thailand, You Win the World’ to promote smoking, which is challenging the dignity of the country in Dr. Hathai’s opinion. The chairman also stressed that under the conditions of the FCTC, the government must not participate in any activities of tobacco companies and not accept any kind of sponsorship from them.
