The lumber warehouse of a furniture, window and wooden door store, Choke Dee Ka Mai Co. Ltd., located on the corner of North Pattaya and Sukhumvit Roads, Naklua, caught fire just before 3 am on April 3. Stored wood erupted in flames and the fire rapidly spread extensively over the tinder-dry, sawdust-strewn floor. Pattaya Police led by Pol.Lt.Col. Somchai Yos-sombat, Deputy Investigation Superintendent, accompanied by a Sawang Boriboon Rescue Team and five fire tenders, rushed to the scene of the conflagration.

The fire fighters were eventually able to bring the blaze under control, but it took more than two hours, as fumes spread throughout the area and onto the road, causing traffic disruption. Thankfully, there were no injuries.

Mr. Prasert Lao-Sri, (33), a lumber warehouse guard, told Pattaya Police that he heard what sounded like the burst of an electrical short circuit coming from the warehouse. He immediately called other workers to bring water and fire extinguishers to put out the fire, but the fire quickly spread out of control. He then ran to inform the shop owner, Mrs. Thanapa Thongthanakul (57), who notified police.

Mrs. Thanapa told Pattaya Police that it could well have been a short circuit that caused the fire as they had happened several times before, but never at night. Previously, workers had been able to handle consequent fires, but as the night shift was short-handed this time, they were unable to control the fire. She estimated the damage to her lumber, wooden doors and windows to be about Bt15 million.

Pattaya Police will conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
