They released a statement to announce the apprehension of a violent criminal, who assaulted three lottery sellers with a steel pipe filled with cement.

One of the victims is dead and three were severely injured, and after each of these incidents had occurred, the police had rushed to investigate in an attempt to apprehend this dangerous criminal.

The first attack occurred at Soi Phranpor, Banglamung on September 16th 2009, when the victim, Mrs. Boon Bupha (47) from Leoi Province, received extensive head and body injuries and later died. She was robbed of her black bag containing 25,000 baht and a mobile phone.

Another second attack occurred at Soi Phermsap, Banglamung on December 12th 2009, when the victim, Mrs. Liam Pakham (44), also from Leoi Province, received severe head and body injuries. She was also robbed of a black bag containing 1,000 baht in cash, 6-lottery tickets, and her mobile phone.

The final case was on December 25th 2009 at Soi Siam Country Club, and the victim was Mrs. Rattanee Sornwongkaew (40) who suffered severe head and body injuries. As with the other victims, she was robbed of her black bag containing 2,000 baht, lottery tickets valued at 40,000 baht, and a mobile phone.

During investigations the team of police investigators discovered that the offender was Mr. Sombat Paowong (47) a labourer from Pechaburi, who had been regularly committing these crimes. He would wait and hold up lottery sellers, then attack the unfortunate victims on their head and body with a steel pipe containing cement, before stealing their possessions and fleeing. It was found that Mr. Paowong was living in the rental room in Soi Nernplubwan but had fled to his hometown in Petchaboon.

Police Colonel Somnul Janket (the police investigation team leader), ordered Police Lieutenant Colonel Nit Withinantakit and the team to travel north, in order to catch Mr. Paowong in his hometown. However, Mr. Paowong had been on the move, so then the investigators requested Mr. Paowong’s wife to contact him by mobile phone and arrange a meeting. Mr. Paowong believed this story and came to the Morchit Bus Terminal in Bangkok to meet a wife, and so he was finally caught by the police officers.

Subsequently the officers went to investigate Mr. Poawong’s rented room in Soi Nernplabwan, East Pattaya, to find more evidence, which included four steel pipes filled with cement, each of 60cm. in length, one black bag, two of mobile phones, and a wooden pad for selling lottery tickets.

Police Colonel Janket explained that the team of police had been tracking down this criminal from the victim’s descriptions, CCTV at the crime scenes and also by other evidence gained after he had committed several similar offences. The criminal, Mr. Paowong, has confessed that he targeted his victims and committed crimes of assault & robbery only with lottery sellers, because he thought that they had much more money.
