UTCC Worries About Political Violence

BANGKOK, June 12 – Thailand‘s political woes, if allowed to escalate and turn violent, will shake public and investor confidence and make the economy grow less than 4 per cent this year, according to a leading academic at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce.

Uttha Pisalvanich, director of the university’s International Trade Study Center, said the current political situation was worrying.

Should the government fail to control demonstrations and decide to declare the state of emergency, it would undermine both public and investor confidence.

Simultaneously, unless the constitution draft is accepted and the general election was held as scheduled late this year, it would affect the overall economy.

Under the circumstances, the economy this year might grow in a range of 3.5-4 per cent, which could further shake local and foreign confidence.

“As a Thai citizen, we want all conflicting parties to solve problems based on reconciliation to prevent further crisis. We wish to see the election held under the new constitution soon for the sake of the country’s economic growth,” he said.
