PATTAYA – February 15, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; At 4:30 a.m., a report of a crazed foreign man waving knives and shouting at a 7-Eleven store was received by Pol. Capt. Theeraphong Ong-ard, Deputy Inspector, Banglamung police station. He rushed to inspect the scene with the inspector police team and more than 10 volunteers.

The incident occurred at the 7-Eleven store at the beginning of Soi Nern Plub Wan, central Pattaya, Moo 9 Tambon Nong Preu, Amphur Banglamung.

At the scene, police discovered a foreign man behaving in a crazy manner. He appeared about age 35, and was wearing navy-blue shorts and a gray T-shirt. He was wearing only one slipper, and had a wound wrapped by a cloth. The man was carrying two knives, and waving them in all directions.

The man was discovered to be Ukranian, and didn’t consent to let anyone come close to him, especially the police. So the police invited the interpreter of Russian language to console him. Time passed for almost 3 hours, but the negotiations were not successful.

Another half hour passed before the mad foreigner finally began to show signs of getting tired. So the plan was made to subdue the suspect by the police of the Banglamung police station and Pattaya police station and Pattaya tourism police. The foreign volunteer Mr. Alex then clothed himself with a defensive covering, and took pepper spray with him before negotiating again with the mad foreigner.

When he got the chance, Mr. Alex pepper-sprayed the face of the foreigner to get him to drop the knives. But the foreign man started swinging the knives in all directions, and then fell down on the ground, which caused the knife to hack the right wrist of an onrushing volunteer. The police finally subdued him after a struggle.

Witnesses told police the foreign man initially appeared to have a normal appearance when he first walked into the 7-Eleven, and had bought a bottle of drinking water. Then he left the store.

But about 15 minutes later, the foreign man returned to the store and walked to the ATM machine. He then went behind the ATM and used red nail polish to write “MI2” on the back. However, a driver of a motorbike-for-hire had walked inside the shop, and saw him write the strange inscription on the ATM. He told the foreign man to stop what he was doing, and asked him, “What do you want ?”

Then the foreign man got angry and pulled out two knives, and asked to see the police. So the clerks called the police, who eventually subdued him. After restraining the foreigner, police took him to Banglamung hospital to calm his emotions.

As for the cause of the incident, police assumed the foreign man is impoverished, and has so many problems that he got stressed, so he made this strange trouble. However, the police have to check for his history and investigate to find the cause of his bizarre behavior, and will prosecute further according to the law.
