Two French Students Die In Stabbing Frenzy In London

In what is thought to be a frenzied attack by a drug-addicted burglar, two French exchange students to London University were butchered and then incinerated in South-East London on Sunday, June29, 2008, in what police describe as the most "frenzied, brutal and horrific" murders ever investigated by Scotland Yard. The officiating police officer, Det. Ch. Insp. Mick Duthie, remarked: " The extent of the injuries are horrific. I have never seen injuries like this throughout my career."

The two 23-yaer-old friends, Messrs. Laurent Bonomo and Gabriel Ferez, were apparently stabbed 243 times, tied up, gagged and then their bodies burnt in a rented New Cross, London apartment. Mr Bonomo had 196 stab wounds, including 100 to his back, and Mr Ferez had been stabbed 47 times. Following what police describe as an obviously lengthy attack, a chemical accelerant was used to set the apartment alight, presumably to cover up the evidence. The emergency services were called after residents reported an explosion in Sterling Gardens, New Cross, late on Sunday night.

The two biochemistry, postgrad. students, on exchange from Clermont-Ferrand University, Central France, were participating in DNA research at Imperial College, London University, and were due to return home at the end of July. Imperial College’s Rector, Sir Roy Anderson, said the students had “bright futures ahead of them”.

Police are currently at a loss to explain the motive behind these two horrific murders. They do not consider it a professional job, nor do they think the two students had any criminal involvement. One possibility is that it was a case of mistaken identity and also that a crazed, drug addict may have been involved. Apparently, a white male was seen running from the scene of the fire, but police have not ruled out the possibility others might have been involved in the murders. They are currently checking limited CCTV footage, recovered yesterday, July3, taken on the night.

The apartment at had apparently been broken into six days before and a laptop stolen, along with a set of keys, which the assailant may have used to gain access. Mr Ferez, who lived at another south London address, was visiting his friend, apparently to play computer games when the attack took place.
Mr Duthie said Mr Bonomo was known to be alive in the early hours of Sunday morning because he spoke to his girlfriend in France.

Mr Bonomo’s fiancee, Mary Bertez, wrote a tribute to him on the social networking website, Facebook.
She said: “I will never stop thinking about you for a second. I had 10 months of a happiness I had never experienced until then. ”

The investigation is proceeding.
