To Catch A Thief; No Handcuffs, So Police Make Due With Rope

Police arrested a former Burmese shop worker who was accused of stealing his fellow worker’s Nokia phone, a month ago. The arresting officer didn’t have handcuffs handy so he used plastic rope to secure the accused thief’s wrists.

On 17 January 2008, Police Sub-Lieutenant Eakachai Moonlee was patrolling around a Sattahip market, when Mrs. Sowanee Nakpatom (40), address 88/83 Moo 1, Sriracha, Chonburi, approached him and asked him to arrest an alleged thief, Mr. Bas (18). According to Mrs. Sowanee, Mr. Bas, a Burmese, former worker in her shop, had stolen a Nokia phone from his Burmese friend, Mr. Yor, who also worked in her shop. Right after the incident, Mr. Bass quit his job and disappeared for about a month. Mrs. Sowanee scoured the second hand shops and finally found out that Mr. Bass had sold the phone for 1700 baht. On 17 January, she was informed that Mr. Bass had returned to the market, in Sattahip; so she requested that the police arrest the alleged miscreant.

Police Sub-Lieutenant Eakachai Moonlee asked the patrol office to send an officer in order to arrest Mr. Bass. However, Sergeant Preecha Nilapaka arrived in a hurry and forgot to bring handcuffs. However, the resourceful sergeant used plastic rope to secure the alleged perpetrator’s wrists and brought him to the police station by police motorbike. Mr. Bass will now have to face the justice system.
