Thailand Tops German Record for Speed Dating

Valentine celebrations saw a new record yesterday 13th February 2010, at the Royal Garden Plaza, Pattaya, when Thailand beat the Germans previous record in speed dating.

Pattaya 14th February 2010 [Pattaya Daily News] Yesterday afternoon at the Fountain Plaza in Royal Garden Plaza Department Store, Mr. Rattanachai Sutthidechanai, Chairman of Tourism and Sports Committee, Mr. Niti Kongrut, TAT Pattaya Director, Mr. Somporn Naksuetrong, Ripley’s Believe it or Not General Manager and Mr. Torbun Phuangmaha Sanook. Com website Managing Director participated in opening the World’s Largest Speed Dating Festivity, which gained a new high, putting them in line for the Guinness Book of Records.

Participants totaling 818 (400 male and 418 females) signed up via the website while another 258 applied in person. Successfully matching couples, it was later found that Thailand had beaten Germany’s previous record by 129 couples matched in November 2008.

This event was the biggest and taking up a larger proportion of space on the ground floor of the Royal Garden Plaza department store, taking up 168 sq. mtr. All applicants were over 20 years and came from Northern and Southern parts of Thailand with Chiengrai and Narathiwat being the farthest provinces. The oldest applicant was a 52 year old and the highest educated was found to have a master’s degree. A number of foreign tourists joined in the experience which helped boost the numbers.

All participants were able to talk with the opposite genders spending three minutes with each other and logging relevant information on an Impression Card supplied by Sanook Thaimate which was later used to decide who their match would be. When the three minutes was up an alarm bell would ring for the male to move on to the next prospective mate, whilst the females stayed seated. It took 7 days to complete the matches whilst keep information secret.

 

Mr. Naksuetrong stated that this festivity was not only to raise statistics to enable them to make the Guinness Book of Records for speed dating, but also to have the largest amount of Participants in the same place at one time and also to promote Pattaya in the tourist industry worldwide by welcoming visitors to join in the celebration of the Love Festival and having a memorable time. He also wanted to thank all the organizers who helped make the event a success.
