Thailand Is Rated the Number One Hazardous Travel Destination

A year long survey taken by a British insurance company turns up some fretful news for British travelers heading to Thailand.

Thailand has been rated the most dangerous travel destination for British tourists. The findings are based on claims that have been made by globe-trotters to leading insurance company, Norwich Union.

Thailand, famous for its beaches, cuisine, Buddhist temples and nightlife, is the most likely place to suffer theft, food poisoning, traffic accidents, lost belongings and even death.

Travelers to South Africa were most likely to suffer violent attacks and have their belongings misplaced. As someone who has had their belongings “misplaced”, I can tell you that it puts a real damper on your trip when you don’t have any of your possessions.

Austria was the destination that came in first in snow-covered mountain activities such as skiing or snowboarding.

If you’re looking for the destination for the highest claims made due to pick-pocketing, then you need to look no farther than the Czech Republic.

The beautiful islands of the Caribbean were rated as the number one place to endure insect bites or stings.

On the flipside of the coin, the safest places were only a few hours at the most from any British airport. The safest place to vacation at was Ireland, followed by Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and France, coincidentally, all in Europe.

“The purpose of our research is not to worry tourists looking forward to their summer holidays, but just to make them aware of what can go wrong when they‘re away from home,” said Norwich Union travel product manager Dawn McMullan.

The survey was based on more than 60 000 claims made to Norwich Union in 2005.

In my opinion, a vacation can be as safe, or as perilous as YOU make it. Sure, sometimes bad things just happen. However, if you are going out and getting stinking drunk to the point that you don‘t even remember your own name, then bad things are bound to happen. But, if you realize that you are in a foreign country, very different than your own, and take some precautions, you are more likely to have a safe and happy vacation.
