Thai Woman Lured Into Uk Sex Trap

According to the BBC (April 30, 2008) a Thai woman, Ms Ubonrat Saosiri, living the the UK paid the sum of £9,000 (Bt567,358) to bring another female Thai national to the UK for immoral purposes in March 2006. The woman had been known from her home village by Saosiri.

An agency offering work in Britain approached the victim was in her family home in Thailand. She decided to take up the offer to pay for her father’s medical bills and her mother’s debts.

Ostensibly, Saosiri’s role in the affair was minimal. She maintained that it was at her anonymous partner’s instigation that the woman be smuggled over surreptitiously to work as a prostitute in what has been described as a “grubby sex den”. Her role was merely to obtain a bogus visa for the woman, who remains unnamed. The process apparently took 15 months.

Saosiri, 26, and her boyfriend then travelled to a London hotel where they handed over large sums of cash to buy the woman in a quick businesslike transaction.

In fact, it was a clear case of sexual exploitation as when the Thai woman arrived in the UK, she was told in no uncertain terms that she was to be put to work in Great Yarmouth in order to repay the cost of bringing her out to Britain, servicing 5 clients per day. The sum she had to work off was an astounding £24,000 (Bt1,513,086).

Investigating officer Det Con Dean Harrison testified that “Tragically, the victim decided she would take the opportunity to help her beleaguered family back home but had no idea that she would be debt bonded, forced into working in the sex industry and be effectively required to deal with several clients a day. She finally repaid the debt by October 2005 after which she fled to Great Yarmouth, having to continue working as a prostate as “she was so embroiled in the underground world that she knew of no other way to live, police said.

“By the end of October 2005 the victim had managed to pay back the £24,000 after having to see an average of five clients a day. She was then able to flee from Norwich and move to the Great Yarmouth area.”

By the time the woman arrived in Yarmouth she was so embroiled in the underground world that she knew of no other way to live than to continue working as a prostitute.

Saosiri, of no fixed abode, is was tried by Norwich Crown Court, accused of sexual exploitation and imprisoned for six months, after which she will be repatriated. The judge, Peter Jacobs, said that he recognized that Saosiri was merely a pawn in a much larger game and she had been used by the sex traders . These individuals apparently had imported many more women to staff brothels.

The case comes just a week after information came to light that altogether 26 women across the UK have been rescued from the sex industry as part of a massive Norfolk police crackdown.
