Taiwanese Man Detained Over Explosive Luggage Claims

A China Airlines flight with over 300 people aboard had to divert from its intended flight route on Sunday after one man claimed to have brought explosives onboard the flight.

Taiwan, the 3rd of May 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: The man, Mr. George Lin [68] a Taiwanese-American, informed the cabin crew of the Taipei-Shanghai China Airways flight that his luggage stored in the plans cargo-hold contained explosives. The pilot immediately diverted the flight to the nearest airport of Hangzhou in China were Mr. Lin was arrested and an investigation of the plane was undertaken.

Later inspections of the plane and Mr. Lin’s luggage revealed no signs of an explosive device with the plane free to continue its flight to Shanghai after merely 4 hours on the ground.

Mr. Lin has subsequently been taken in for questioning, with unconfirmed reports stating that Mr. Lin had made the comment as a joke. Mr. Lin is a US citizen but had been travelling in the region using his native Taiwanese documents, reportedly seeing to various business interests that his has in China.

Following years of pro-independence movements and divisions between China and Taiwan, direct flights between the two nations began in 2008 after the current Taiwanese President Ma Ying-Jeou reversed his predecessor’s policies, strengthening economic ties with the mainland.
