Surayud Chulanont Thai PM Sees Possible Early Election

BANGKOK, May 18 – Thailand's Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said Friday he believes that the sooner a general election is held, the better it will be for the well-being of the kingdom.

But the timing of the election does not only depend on the prime minister, he said, but the process of democracy also relies on all other parties involved.

How prepared the agencies mandated to return the country to democratic rule, such as the Election Commission, is not yet clear, but he said, it is possible that the election could be held sooner than earlier speculated.

Last year, Gen. Surayud said the next general election might be held by September, but earlier this year he said it might be in December.

The prime minister emphatically said he did not believe another military coup would take place, further delaying a return to democratic rule.

Meanwhile, an opinion poll conducted by Dhurakitbundit University has found 77 per cent of 1,645 Bangkok residents saying they will go to the polls, compared to 22 per cent who say otherwise.

According to a recent poll, 83 per cent of the respondents said they will accept the Constitution currently being rewritten for Thailand’s first ever public referendum, compared to 16 per cent who report they will not accept it.

Should the rewritten Constitution be rejected in the referendum, 52 per cent of the respondents state that any other charter earlier drafted and implemented will do on a temporary basis, compared to 47 per cent who demand adoption of the 1997 Constitution, ignored by the military coup of September 19, 2006.

The poll found 74 per cent of all respondents saying they are unsure that an election will take place this year, compared to 26 per cent who say otherwise.
