Shortcut to a Womans Heart: Diamonds

From years gone by, diamonds have always caught a girls’ eye. Bright, sparkling diamonds. Today though, being able to afford such a luxury is way beyond many women’s dreams unless it is nothing more than the size of a spec of dust.

There have been many qualities of the synthetic diamond such as cubic zirconia’s and Moissanite which were made to pass for diamonds, but now, we have the man made gem quality diamond. Not a false diamond or a synthetic diamond, a real man made, laboratory grown diamond. Instead of having to dig the hundreds of miles underground for the little sparklies that has taken millions of years to form, they are now being grown in the same conditions that have been recreated in laboratories in such  places as Sarasota, Florida, and Boston.  They are the real thing that has been created in a matter of days instead of millions of years.

A company in Florida that specializes in growing coloured diamonds stated that they had recreated the same conditions that occur hundreds of miles below ground and found that after four and a half days, they have produced a three carat rough diamond which is no different to one that has been mined. The Gemological Institute of America researchers and grading body have acknowledged that these are diamonds, the real deal. Synthetic diamonds have actually been produced purposely for the industry for a number of years by General Electric, but creating near colourless quality diamonds big enough for cutting was merely a fantasy.

The manufactured diamond has only recently become available as it is relatively new on the diamond market with some jewelers having never seen one. However, by simply searching the Web you should be able to find authorized retailers of the Gemisis cultured diamonds. Laboratory grown coloured diamonds are approximately the same price one would expect to pay for a natural white diamond due to the rarity in nature, whereas a natural colour would be less than half price of that of a mined diamond allowing consumers to have the opportunity to have the same bling as the rich and famous at a fraction of the cost.

Gemisis produced mostly yellow and orange diamonds, but have recently added limited quantities of pink and blue.  Consumers can expect to save around 30% on the grown compared to the price of the mined diamonds. When proposing to purchase a diamond, you may be asked “cultured” or “synthetic” diamonds. Don’t be put off or confused by these terms as they both describe the same thing.  Gemisis prefers the term “cultured” as the man made diamond is encourage to grow as is the pearl, but the Gemological Institute of America prefer the reference of “synthetic”, keeping the “cultured” for organically grown materials.

Whatever the decided name, it is agreed by all that the man made diamond has the same physical and optical qualities of a mined diamond, though most of them being no bigger than a one carat. Where coloured stones are rare in naturally mined diamonds, colourless are rare in the manufactured kind. The Gemological Laboratory will only give an identification report disclosing that it is synthetic and listing its’ carat weight, measurements and transparency among the usual “4C’s” (cut, clarity, carat weight and colour). However, the European Gemological Laboratory USA will grade the stones for you, but grading is usually reserved for the larger diamond and is important if you think you may want to resell it.

The man made diamond has one difference that only a jeweler would find and that is the inclusions of bits of mineral that are enclosed in a natural diamond as it forms under the earths surface. The lack of inclusions is actually a good thing as they are regarded as flaws. It has been said that to the naked eye, the difference between a man made and mined diamond is impossible as the man made material is beautiful. Proving that a man made diamond is not the real thing can be time consuming and costly.  The Gemological Institute is selling two types of machines developed by cartel De Beers specifically designed to test for synthetics. Manufacturers are adamant that there is a market out there for the new man made diamond.
