Schumacher Reminisces as Ferrari Celebrate 800th Race

The Italian Scuderia, Ferrari, will celebrate its 800th formula one race on Sunday at the Turkish Grand Prix after first appearing on the scene over 60 years ago in Monaco. The oldest team on the grid, Ferrari has been branded a ‘family,’ both by insiders and onlookers; with former champion Michael Schumacher claiming that, “a part of my heart will always be red."

Turkey, the 30th of May 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: As the heat intensifies for today’s Turkish Grand Prix, Ferrari participation marks the team’s 800th foray onto the grid in over 60 years of competitive racing. The circuits most glamorous and successful team will reach the milestone having started 128 races more than closest rivals and comparative newcomers McLaren.

Ferrari is the only team to have survived in the championship since the open race in 1950 and quite rightly, no other team can claim to have such passionate supporters, who according to Ferrari insiders “are the soul and spirit of a nation.” Scuderia is a term used to describe many Italian sporting teams, especially that of motor racing outfits, directly translating as a term used to describe stables reserved for race horses, hence the prancing horse on Ferrari’s emblem.

Since their debut in Monaco 60 years ago, Ferrari have amassed 15 driver titles, 16 constructor titles and 211 race wins. In addition there have been an impressive 632 podium finishes, 203 pole positions and 221 fastest laps set by the Italian champions. Other records include 14 consecutive wins between 1952-53, 80 one-two finishes and 15 wins in a single season (shared with McLaren).

Michael Schumacher, to date Ferrari’s most successful driver with 7 championships in a 14 year career with Scuderia, recently stated how he still feels part of the ‘family’ despite having retired in 2006 before coming back to the sport in 2010 with Mercedes. “When you are part of a community for 14 years it inevitably has an effect on you. I will always have a part of Ferrari inside me. The time I spent with Ferrari was wonderful; I made friends and had experiences that I would not want to be without. Concepts that I had never contemplated before my time at Ferrari came to life for me there: legend, culture and history.”

Another former Ferrari champion, Kimi Raikkonen, agreed with Schumacher stating that Ferrari had carved a place in his heart as well. “My character and how I express myself is very different to the Italian way, but that did not stop us from understanding each other and the emotions we shared,” said the Finn, dubbed the ‘Iceman.’

Ferrari marked their 800th race anniversary in Istanbul with a special logo design implemented on the cars’ engine covers and an extravagant champagne reception at the 19th century Ottoman Villa on the shores of Bocphorus.
