Pattaya, 23 November 2010[Pattaya Daily News]: At 1.30 am, Banglamung Police Investigator, Lieutenant Klit Inkaew, was notified that a foreign tourist had been stabbed during a robbery in front of Pothisamphan School on Pattaya-Naklua Road, Naklua, Banglamung. Subsequently a team of officers together with the Sawang Boriboon rescue team were dispatched to the scene.

On arrival police found that several bystanders who had witnessed the incident had caught and detained a Thai man, Mr. Wirat Phimbut [28] from Prajeenburi who they claimed was responsible for the stabbing of a Russian woman, Miss Oiga Nazarenko [25], who had already been sent to Bangkok Pattaya Hospital for treatment. According to witnesses, the victim and a friend had been walking along the Pattaya-Naklua Road when the suspects arrived on a motorbike and attempted to rob her with a knife. The victim resisted and a struggle ensued, resulting in the Russian lady being stabbed in the stomach. On searching Mr. Wirat, police found a Canon digital camera, 13 dollars, a mobile phone and release documents from the Klongprem prison. They also found a cutter which had been used to attack the victim.

The suspect confessed that he had been released from prison 5 months ago having served a sentence for murder. He said that he and a friend, Mr. Gap, who he had met when he was in prison, had drinking together.

They needed some more whisky but had no money, so they decided to drive around on a motorbike looking for someone to rob, with Mr. Gap driving and himself riding pillion. They eventually spotted a Russian woman holding a digital camera walking with another woman on the roadside. He then approached the victim, pulling a cutter to force her to give him her valuables. The woman resisted and she put up a fight to protect herself, at which point he stabbed her in the stomach. The suspects then tried to escape from the scene, but Mr. Wirat was apprehended by passers-by whilst Mr. Gap fled the scene on the motorbike.

Police later went to see the victim at the hospital, but she was in too serious a condition to be questioned.
Meanwhile Mr. Wirat was detained at the Banglamung Police investigation department for further judicial proceedings. Police expect the imminent arrest of the second suspect.
