Qatar, the 20th of March 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: In previous trials at Sepang in Malaysia, Rossi had outclassed the field on his new M1 Fiat Yamaha bike, although Sepang is known to be one of his favoured race tracks. Losail, Qatar, was the location designated for this year night testing and Rossi once again outshone the field coming in with a lap time 0.315 seconds faster than former world champion Australian Casey Stoner.

Riding the Ducati manufacturer bike, Stoner was expected to be at the fore in testing having won the Qatar Grand Prix for the last 3 years. Newly promoted MotoGP rider Ben Spies came in third with a lap time of 0.552 slower than Rossi. Spies is riding the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team bike.

Rossi was interview in regards to his pre-season form and the new bikes performance, stating; “I am so happy today because this isn’t one of our best tracks and to come here and be fastest shows what a great job Yamaha has done with this new M1. We are quite competitive and this gives me a good feeling. We still have to decide the right tyre and the best setting for it, and we will keep working on the electronics but the most important thing is that we’re faster than last year!”

The first race of 2010 will then take place back at Qatar on the evening of April 11 with only the one testing day left taking place overnight.
