TAK – August 3, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]; Mr. Suchat Teekasuk, sheriff of Umphang district, reported that searchers still haven’t found a missing rafting guide who was trying to help a tourist who had fallen from the raft.

On July 31, Mr. Pichai Yodkaeo, 38, a tourist guide of a resort in Umphang, was guiding a group of tourists who were rafting in Mae Klong stream to see the Tee-Lor-Rae waterfall, about 30 km from the center of Umphang district.

On their return trip, a tourist fell out of the rubber boat, so Mr. Pichai jumped into the water to help the tourist. The tourist was also helped by others and survived. But Mr. Pichai was dragged by the stream in front of the tourists.

One of the other guides tried to find Mr. Pichai, but was unsuccessful. The party also searched the shoreline on foot before reporting the incident to the police. They feared that he had drowned.

A search party was organized by the district sheriff, who coordinated the government offices of the wild life conservation office and 347 border patrol police officers to bring 3 rubber boats to find him.

But search efforts were hampered by three consecutive days of rain that caused the Mae Klong stream to swell and rush more rapidly. Mr. Pichai’s body is still missing.
