Pattaya, the 14th of February 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Zvonareva, given a tough semi-final against the 4th seeded Yaroslava Shvedova, ending in three sets, had the media and pundits alike predicting an upset final. However; Zvonareva’s quality shone through in the end, defeating the tough Thai veteran, Tamarine, in two sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Zvonareva’s win was her 10th on the Sony Ericsson WTA tour and her second successful title defence following her wins at the Memphis Open in 2004-2005. After struggling in the showpiece event of early tournaments, Zvonareva has now improved her finals record to 10-11. Tamarine and Zvonareva have met only once before, at Wimbledon in 2008 where the unfavoured Thai staged an upset win to knock Zvonareva out of the major.

Following the match, Zvonareva praised Tamarine’s effort, stating: “I’d like to congratulate Tammy for coming back here and playing so well this week. The Thai people are so proud of her,” further thanking the organisers; “For me, I’m very happy to come back and defend my title this year. I also hope to come to Pattaya next year. Thanks to all of the sponsors and Mr. Geoffrey Rowe, the Tournament Director, for making the tournament such a success.”

Tamarine also got a chance so address her fans, thanking the crowd, tournament organisers and congratulating Zvonareva on her win. “Thank you very much too all the fans here – especially the Thai fans – for cheering me on during the week. Also thanks to the Russian fans for cheering Vera on, she played so well today. Thanks to all the sponsors who host this tournament every year and give me a chance to play here. I’ll try to play my best with my partner in the doubles final now!”

Although defeated in the singles showpiece, Tamarine and doubles partner Marina Erakovic successfully captured the doubles title against Anna Chakvetadze and Ksenia Pervak. The match started fast with both pairs fighting hard to gain a break point in the first set, before Chakvetadze and Pervak collapsed in the second eventually going down 7-5, 6-1.
