Pope Benedict Embroiled in Paedophile Cover-up Scandal

The Vatican is staunchly defending the Pope who is currently being accused of taking no punitive action against an American Roman Catholic priest who sexually molesting 200 deaf boys, starting 60 years ago and continuing for 24 years. The Vatican maintains there has been no cover up, asserting instead that there is currently a conspiracy against the Church.

March 26, 2010, [Pattaya Daily News]: Pope Benedict XVI, then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, whilst in charge of Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, was twice informed by Monsignor Rembert Weakland, then the Archbishop of Milwaukee, in 1996, of the case of a paedolphile priest, Father Murphy, who had been consistently molesting up to 200 deaf children in his care over a 24-year period, asking that he be defrocked. The archbishop maintains that Cardinal Ratzinger ignored his notification. In addition, although the Catholic Church condemns paedophilia as a grave sin, the policy of the Roman Catholic Church at the time was to move offending priests to other locations, which was done for Father Murphy, who was in position to continue his wayward ways until his death in 1998.

Father Lawrence C. Murphy, confessed to having molested scores of pupils, preying on his victims in their dormitories and on school trips, soliciting potential victims via the confessional, while he was a  teacher and later  director of the St John’s School for the Deaf in St Francis, Wisconsin, from 1950 to 1974. Having been exposed, Murphy was quietly moved, at the direct instigation of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, to the Diocese of Superior in northern Wisconsin in 1974 to continue his predatory activities for another 24 years, amongst the parish and school children in. Murphy admitted to abusing boys before he died in 1998.

Eight months following the Archbishop of Milwaukee Vatican notification,  Murphy was  made the subject of a secret canonical trial, but it was stopped after Murphy appealed to Cardinal Ratzinger, saying he had repented already, was sick and the window of opportunity under the Church’s own statute of limitations  had expired as the offences had happened over 20 years previously.

Currently, Pope Benedict XVI has hardened his attitude towards clerical abuse, but it remains a case of having locked the door after the horse has bolted, and the cloud of suspicion still remains that whilst in charge of the Church Watchdog Department, he chose not to act on this clerical abuse case and others. Additionally, America is just one of the locales where Catholic clerical abuse and paedophilia scandal cover-ups are alleged to have happened in the recent past, Europe, too, has seen numerous instances.
