PM Surayud Chulanont Uses Us Pr Firm to Counter Anti-Thai Sentiments

In what has been seen partially as a refutation of a US pharmaceutical lobby group’s recent assertion in the Wall Street Journal that Thailand had broken US AIDS medicine patents and partially to retaliate against ousted leader Thaksin Shinawattra’s international campaign to denigrate the current government, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont proposes hiring a US PR firm to improve Thailand’s image abroad.

The Prime Minister intends to spend $US 600,000 (although the figures differ between sources) on a three-month public relations campaign to improve the post-coup government’s less than dynamic image. 
Informed opinion regards the main thrust of the PR campaign, however, as a counter measure against Mr. Thaksin’s

machinations. Mr. Thaksin is apparently employing US lobbyists to discredit the present government’s performance and exalt his own. One in particular, Ken Adelman, in an article in April 27th Washington Times entitled “Troubles from Thailand

*** “In a fit of economic nationalism, the government is spooking outside investment in the country by increasing surveillance of economic transactions, restricting business advertising and pushing foreign investors to sell Thai holdings” and

*** “In addition to copyright concerns, piracy of consumer goods, satellite, cable and telecommunications signals thrive largely unchecked by the Thai government. Most recently, the government brazenly announced it was breaking patents on drugs produced by Western corporations.”

Thaksin is supposedly paying $200,000 a month for lobbyists, including Edelman Public Relations, to build up his image and create negative press for the military-backed government. Thai Foreign Minister Nitya Pibulsonggram declared that he was well aware who was behind the anti-government propaganda and that the ministry was ready to explain the facts.
