PATTAYA – December 15, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]; at 12:30 a.m., police arrested a man for illegally possessing three handguns. Making the arrests were Pol. Capt. Varakorn Barnnasit, Deputy Inspector, section 2, along with a police team.

The suspect was identified as Mr. Amnart or Nai Meelanan, age 39, living in Tambon Nong Preu, Amphur Banglamung. He was arrested and taken to the Pattaya police station.

Police seized 3 illegal handguns and bullets, consisting of a 9 mm gun with 50 bullets; a .32 caliber gun with 10 bullets; and a .22 caliber gun with 90 bullets. The police had earlier stopped Mr. Amnart on his motorbike because he was driving suspiciously in Soi VC, or Soi Bamboo, in south Pattaya.

The police asked to search in his body and found a 9 mm. gun that was fully loaded. Mr. Amnart confessed that it was an illegal gun he had bought from a friend, and he did not have a license for it.

So the police took Mr. Amnart to his rental room with no address on the second floor of the building in Soi Bamboo. In his room, police found the other two guns and the bullets in a handbag, which they seized.

During questioning, Mr. Amnart said that he bought the illegal guns from two teenage gangs in Pattaya: from a gang in Soi Wat Tharm, and another gang in Soi Nern Plub Warn. He had paid about 30,000 THB for each pistol.

He was fully aware that the guns were probably stolen from the owners. But because the guns were so cheap, he bought them to shoot at the gun range, because he likes shooting and likes handguns very much. But he never used the guns to shoot anyone, he said.

Mr. Amnart wanted to buy legal guns, but didn’t have enough money to afford them. So he had to buy the illegal guns, even though he knew he would be arrested someday for having them.

The police charged Mr. Amnart with an accusation of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and sent him to the investigation officer of Pattaya police station to prosecute. Police will also investigate whether the illegal guns were used to make any trouble or not.
