BANGKOK – October 29, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]: the report of an arrest of a Vietnamese woman for pickpocketing was received by Pol. Lt. Col. Somkiat Ploytabtim, detective officer, Lumpini police station.

The victim was identified as Ms.Thanadda Swangduean, age 43, a freelance writer, living at house number 36, moo 12, Banpueng, Phrapradang, Samutprakarn.

On October 27, the victim had been walking around at the national Book Week fair, at Queen Sirikit national conference center, Ratchada Klong Teoy. But someone pickpocketed her and stole her white iPhone 4s worth 26,000 baht.

So the next day Ms. Thanadda bought a fake iPhone worth about 5,000 baht, and used many rubber bands to bind it to her back pants pocket. So anyone who tried to steal the decoy phone would fail to take it and entrap themselves.

Ms. Thanadda returned to the book fair and stood around waiting for the pickpocket to try again. Then the Vietnamese suspect tried to pick her pocket and was caught red-handed. Ms. Thannada called the security guard to take the thief. She also notified the Lumpini police, because she was angry at having her phone stolen, so she found the way to get revenge.

The arrested suspect was identified as Ms. Din Thi Bich, age 33. The police commander said Ms. Din is suspected of being a member of a pickpocketing gang. Police will continue to question her further to expand the case and track down any other gang members. For now, police are charging the suspect with snatching other person’s assets.
