PHUKET : Bryan Robson won winner medal in his debut tournament as national coach when his Thailand XI beat Hoang Anh Gia Lai of Vietnam on penalties in the final of the Phuket Kata Group Cupon Thursday 29, October

The Thais rallied from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes before winning 7-6 in a shoot-out in the four-team friendly tournament at Surakul stadium.

Hoang Anh, coached by former Thailand international Dusit Chalermsaen, shocked the home side when they raced to a 2-0 lead inside the opening 19 minutes.

Rodrigo Toledo put the visiting team in front after 16 minutes and Hoang Van Thuan added another three minutes later.

Strikers Teerathep Winothai and Teerasil Dangda came close to scoring for Thailand on several occasions but Hoang Anh goalkeeper Michal Silhavy was in good form.

Thailand cut the deficit to 2-1 just before half-time when Datsakorn Thonglao headed the ball home from close range.

Thailand equalized two minutes after the interval. Silhavy missed a Narongchai Vachiraban free-kick as the ball went into his own net.

The hosts kept piling pressure on the Vietnamese and created many scoring chances.

Hoang Anh were reduced to 10 men in injury time when Jang Mung They was sent off after receiving his second yellow card for obstructing Narongchai who was taking a free-kick.

“The players showed their character. I am very delighted by their attitude after being two goals down,” said Robson.

“After two games, I have seen quite a lot of them and know their style. I hope I can bring out their potential.”

Thailand, a mixture of full national and SEA Games (Under-23) players, beat Burmese champions Yadanarbon 2-0 in their opening match on Tuesday.

Thailand will have another warm-up game on Nov 8 against Syria.

Former England captain Robson was appointed coach of the Thai national team two weeks ago.

His first competitive assignment will be the Asian Cup qualifying matches against Singapore on Nov 14 and 18.

In the third-place play-off, Thai Premier League champions Muang Thong United beat Yadanarbon 4-2.
