Phuket Aussie Killer Arrested ”Needed 300 THB for Bar Bill”

Thai police have arrested two suspects wanted for the murder of Australian women and wounding her traveling companion in Phuket on Wednesday last week. More CCTV units urgently needed on Phuket Island.

PHUKET – June 25, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]; Mr. Somboon Jirayut, the Chaiman of Phuket Tourism Association, Mr. Paiboon Ubatsaring and the Chairman of the Phuket Provincial Administration Organization, went to see Mr. Tree Akkaradecha, the Phuket provincial governor regarding the recent brutal knife killing of a 60-year-old mother of three from Perth,Australia.

Mr. Paiboon said that Phuket province urgently needs to install CCTV units all over the island.
10,000 close circuit television cameras are needed. Cost 2,000 million THB. Central government support is needed, said Mr Paiboon. Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung said the swift arrest of the two suspects were important for Thailand’s image as a tourist friendly destination.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Chonnasit Wattanawarangkul, Commissioner, Phuket police said that, they have arrested the suspects Mr. Surin Tasthong, 37 from Nongsonghong, Samutsakorn province. The second suspect Mr. Surasak or “Boy” Suwanchot, 26 from Saimak, Cheanyai district , Nakon Si Thammarat.

The quick arrest was made thanks to images from the security cameras taken before the fatal stabbing which show the two suspects at bar in Chalong area Phuket town.

A witness said that two suspects were drinking alcohol but were short of money so they tried to steal the Australian woman’s hand bag because they needed 300 THB to their bar bill.

Pol. Gen. Preawphan Damaphong, Director General said that, Mr. Surin, was arrested in Samutsakorn province on the night of June 24, and Mr. Surasak was arrested the following morning of June 25 in Chumporn province.

Both suspects had previously been arrested for possession and use of crystal methamphetamine or “ice’.

Pol. Gen. Preawphan Damaphong will fly to Phuket to supervise the case and follow up the interrogation.

Later Pol. Gen. Preawphan said that, the police had found the murder weapon and the blood stained clothes the suspects wore on the night of the killing.

The suspects have been detained at Thalang police station. The re-enactment of the crime will follow soon.
