In a style reminiscent of Robin Hood, the gentleman-robber, a tall, well-built Thai man of about 40, entered the Chalerm-Prakiet branch of the Siam Commercial Bank at the intersection of North Pattaya and Third Road, on the pretense of inquiring if it handled accident insurance extensions. He was wearing dark glasses, a white T-shirt underneath a red jacket bearing the slogan “Mitr Yontr Pattaya” on the back, military-style trousers, a grey cap and sneakers, carrying a black shoulder bag. After ascertaining that the bank did indeed handle such insurance, he stepped out of the bank and returned immediately with a gun. Rather than being excessively intimidating, he told the young cashier, Miss Woraporn Maisart, “I only want money. I don’t want to hurt anyone. I need the cash immediately.”

At this point, he stepped on a chair and leapt over the counter. He grabbed about Bt 200,000 cash from a drawer, and put in his bag, telling the staff to stay calm. He then made his escape on a red Honda Wave 100, speeding in the direction of North Pattaya and turned left towards Dolphin Roundabout. After Miss Woraporn had regained her composure, she alerted the police.

A high powered response police team headed by Police Commissioner Pol.Lt.Gen. Jetanakorn Nabpeetabpat responded and arrived soon after 1 pm. They found the staff in a state of panic, but Miss Woraporn Maisart (28),the cashier who had been at the forefront of the robbery was sufficiently calm to be able to relate the circumstances of the robbery to the police. She told them that only she and another cashier were on duty, the rest of the staff being at lunch on the Second Floor. Conveniently, the robber had left his 12 inch-long footprints on the chair and had also been picked up on the bank’s CCTV. The police fingerprinted the area and alerted police investigators to conduct surveillance on the network of CCTV around Pattaya. However, as most of these are damaged, they are unlikely to shed much light on the escape route of the robber.

Police are working on the assumption that the robber’s motive could be the need to repay a gambling debt. The investigation is proceeding and police are hoping for a swift capture.
