Pattaya, – Saturday 30th January 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: – The thrust of this Seminar was “Quality of Life Development for Street Children in Pattaya,” and was sponsored by “World Vision” and focused on solving problems inflicted on street children’s livelihoods at the root causes. These include family poverty, lack of local community strength, low family values, social indecency and vices that are sometimes displayed to children via a few irresponsible media groups.

This project will liaise with government organizations for basic education, vocational training, proper health care and the development of a curriculum that fits their needs. Local supportive services will include child protection, plus rehabilitation and development services for children who accompany their parents, with a broad range of help. Survival & life skills training, counseling visits, case referrals, a “hotline service,” school registrations, new learning & child care centres plus informal education that will be enhanced with good health & reproductive classes.

The economic situation sees parents having too little time to take care of children because of the need to earn sufficient money to meet family needs with their current low incomes. The migration of laborers and their families has worsened this situation, with overcrowded communities, more poverty, divorce and the inability of families to take proper car of their children. These children are most vulnerable because of their total dependency on adults, so there are an increasing number of street children in many communities. In these cases, poverty, broken families, domestic violence and negligence drive children to leave home and they may seek someone outside the home for emotional support, or children of low intellect can be easily lured into indecent practices.

After this important seminar, there was a meeting on the same topic at Pattaya City Hall on the afternoon of the same day, and the aim is to build up a network to co-ordinate with government organizations, community leaders, non-government organizations and local administrative bodies, in order to prevent & solve the problems of street & migrant children within Pattaya City.

Substitute services cover raising public awareness concerning street children in Pattaya and to mobilize public participation in both the prevention and solutions to these problems. This will include the production of leaflets, stickers and brochures on “child rights” and fight child prostitution, HIV / AIDS and drug addiction, plus the organization of public rallies & other campaigns.
