PATTAYA – [PattayaDailyNews]; Pattaya beach has been suffering from continuous erosion for many years which has caused the beach to decrease in size especially South to North Pattaya beach. People are worried that the beach will disappear if nothing is done.

However, Pattaya officials intended to study the beach erosion and will explain the effects to the concerned units so that they can sort the situation. The local office isn’t able to cope with this situation alone and there has been no more progress about this issue. Later the Marine department had hired ARRI (Aquatic Resources Research Institute, Chulalongkorn University) to study the erosion.

They have decided to landfill 3 km of the beach at a width of 35 metres which will take around 18 months at a cost of 430 million baht. Upon inspecting the condition of Pattaya beach in 1952 the beach had 60 Rais and 35.6 meters in width but the beach now has 3.5-5 meters in width and is eroding at a rate of 1.8 meters a year. The main factor of erosion is the construction of the pier and flood water draining off the land. It’s expected that the beach will be completely eroded within 3-5 years.

In addition, another factor that the officials face is draining flood water off beach road during the rainy season which has caused a lot of damage to the beach and may cause damage to the new beach.

However, Pattaya official had realized this situation; therefore, they suggested Pattaya congress to provide a budget to cope with the flood water before the landfill project starts.
