Origin of April Fool.

April Fools or All Fools day has a tantalizing history. A much asked question is, could there be a common origin or has the April Fools idea have risen spontaneously in different eras. There wasn’t really a first April Fools Day that can be pin pointed on any calendar, it sort of evolved.

‘The Origin of April Fools Day’, written by Joseph Boskin was published in the associated press in 1983. The article, told how the mystery of April Fools origin had finally been solved.

A history professor at Boston University, Joseph Boskin had discovered how the April Fools celebration had begun during the Roman Empire. Emperor Constantine decreed that the court Fool would be given the chance to rule the kingdom for one day a year, after a court jester had boasted to the court that the Fools and jesters could rule the kingdom better than the Emperor.

A jester named Kugel was appointed ruler in the first year, who immediately decreed that only the absurd would be allowed in the kingdom on that day.

Therefore the tradition of April Fool’s was born.

Throughout the country, News media reprinted the Associated Press story, but the Reporter who interviewed Professor Boskin did not realize that Boskin was a hoaxer.  Not one word of the story was true which Boskins admitted a few weeks later. Boston University issued a statement apologizing for the joke with many papers having to publish retractions.

The nearest that can be identified as the beginning of the tradition was in France 1582. Prior to this, the New Year was celebrated for eight days beginning March 25th. Under the reign of Charles IX, the Gregorian calendar was introduced and New Years day was moved to January 1st.

However in those days as news was passed on by foot, many people did not receive the news for several years while others who were obstinate refused to accept the new calendar and continued to celebrate the New Year on April 1st. These backward folk were labeled as ‘fools’ by the general populace and were subjected to some considerable ridicule and were often sent on ‘fools errands’.

Over time, this harassment evolved over time into a tradition of plying pranks on the 1st April with the tradition spreading across England and Scotland during the 18th century, later being introduced to the American colonies of both the English and the French. Thus, April Fools Day developed into an international fun festival, with different nationalities specializing in their own brand of humor at the expense of family and friends.

Pranks played on April Fools day ranges from the simple ‘your shoelace is untied’ to more elaborate tricks. Whatever the prank, it usually ends with the prankster shouting ‘April Fool.’

Practical jokes are common practice, sometimes involving the news media who once made a short film on spaghetti farmers and how they harvested their crop of spaghetti from trees.

April Fools Day is a for fun only celebration. No one is expected to purchase gifts or take their partners out to fancy restaurants and no body gets to have time off school.  It is simply a fun day where one must remain vigilant for he may be the next April Fool.
