PHUKET – January 27, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; a disturbed Italian tourist was arrested while driving a stolen BMW around Phuket. The sequence of events began when the police radio center at Meuang Phuket was notified that a man’s car had been stolen.

The victim was identified as Mr. Voravit Amornsupphakul, age 44, who reported the theft of his black BMW series 5 automobile. He had parked his car but left the engine running in front of the laundry shop opposite to Phuket technical college on Yaowarat road. The thief then stole his car.

Police officers made the radio call to the nearby police station to look out for the stolen vehicle. A checkpoint in front of the Thalarng police station was set up. About 45 minutes later, officers at the checkpoint spotted the stolen BMW crossing the red light intersection in front of the police station.

Police stopped the car and restrained the driver. They saw he was a foreign man, but not wearing any clothes. The foreign man began speaking, but the officers were unable to understand him. The foreigner’s clothes had been put on the seat beside him, so the police told him to wear his clothes.

Police then contacted the Phuket tourism police to request someone to translate the language the foreigner was speaking. Through the translator, the police discovered that the trouble maker was an Italian man named Mr. Peo Meerenzo Macdikkary, age 46.

They discovered that Mr. Peo had earlier been detained by Phuket police, after he had tried to commit suicide by jumping into a pond on January 26. Fortunately he was rescued by local residents who had seen him.

After his suicide attempt, the police of Thoongthong police station brought Mr. Peo to the station, to wait to be picked up by the officer of the Italy embassy in Thailand, who would assist in returning him to Italy. But while no one was looking, Mr. Peo walked away from the Phuket police station and disappeared.

Mr. Peo told police that after he escaped, he then stole the BMW that had its engine running, and drove around for nearly an hour. Then he parked the car and took off all of his clothes. He continued to drive around, until he was arrested about 20 meters from the Thalarng police station.

Phuket police were unsure whether Mr. Peo is sick with a depressive disorder, or has some type of nervous system disease. The Phuket investigation officer will send him to be checked at Wachira Phuket hospital. Initially, police are charging Mr. Peo with stealing other people’s property.
