PATTAYA – January 20, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; at 4 p.m., at the Bali Hai pier, a crowd of onlookers excitedly watched the counting of votes for the Walking Street Community Board elections, which had finished voting at 3 p.m.

There were two competing slates of candidates. The first is informally known as the “old group,” the ones who claim that “We Built Walking Street,” and were seeking re-election.

The 14-member “old group” is headed by Mr. Sunthorn Kungsirikul, who reportedly owns 2 go-go bars on soi Diamond. He claims to have two decades of being involved in Pattaya’s nightlife.

Meanwhile, the “new group” of challengers are the “We Love Walking Street Community Pattaya.” Their leader is Mr. Methakrit Sutanarot, who said his group will bring fresh innovations to Walking Street.

There were about 1,000 people eligible to vote, and a lot of voters were waiting for the results, as well as the candidates. When the final vote tally was completed, the winners were the “We Love Walking Street” party.

The winners totaled 40 votes more than the old group, who graciously congratulated the winners. Mr. Sunthorn, the chairman of the old group, and the 14 defeated members congratulated the winners with smiling faces.

For Mr. Methakrit Sutanarot, the chairman of the We Love Walking Street community group, he was glad that his party got the trust of residents. He pledged that his party would help develop Walking Street to be a better place that will help the tourism business of Pattaya.

Among the campaign promises of his group was to improve the traffic and the security of Walking Street, and arrange for more frequent garbage pickups.
