A Scanner Darkly is set in suburban Orange County, California in a future where America has lost the war on drugs. Enter our main character, undercover Orange County cop Agent Fred played by Keanu Reeves. His assignment is to spy on some of his drug addict buddies using his skills of disguise.

Our main character is both Bob Arctor, part of a household of hippie drug-users, and Agent Fred, an undercover police agent assigned to spy on them. While posing as a drug dealer, he ends up ingesting too much of the popular drug, Substance D, which causes its users to develop split-personalities. He ends up developing a split personality himself, which leaves him unable to distinguish between being a drug dealer and a policeman. He ultimately ends up spying on himself without even knowing it.

Other big name actors in the film are Woody Harrelson, Robert Downey Jr., and Winona Ryder. Oddly enough, all have had run-ins with the police on drug related happenings.

The movie was based on a book written by Philip K. Dick. If that name rings a bell, it should. The famous cult-classic Blade Runner was based on another of Dick’s novels, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep”. Director Richard Linklater is hoping this film will reach the same kind of fame.
