Many had camped at the Vatican the night before the ceremony, chanting the prayer, “Feast of Faith”. Thousands of young people, who were reportedly inspired by John Paul II’s example, filled St. Peter’s square and along the main Rome avenue leading to the Vatican as the sanctification mass began.

Some pilgrims chanted religious hymns near St. Peter’s colonnade where a large poster of John Paul was hung with his late famous phrases, “Open wide the doors to Christ.”

Thousands of people travelled from John Paul’s native Poland. Some of them waved the Solidarity flags, which the late pope supported in its struggle against communist power in the 1980’s.

“I feel very excited. It’s a great opportunity to share this historical moment. We didn’t sleep all night but I’m more excited than tired,” said Belen Lavilla, 12, who came by boat from Barcelona with hundreds of young people.

A Polish woman, Margerit Solike, 48, who wore a cream national dress with red flowers said, “It’s a great day full of emotion!”
Stanislaw Motyka, 62, in a traditional Polish costume, said “My only hope is to live to see him [John Paul] be made a saint.”

Volunteers handed out water bottles to the pilgrims and service sheets for the beatification in six languages. Religious songs resonated via large speakers and some of John Paul’s most beloved prayers in honour of the Virgin Mary.

Hundreds also gathered at the ancient Circus Maximus, where 200,000 pilgrims celebrated John Paul’s supremacy in the Roman Catholic Church at an emotional prayer on Saturday including some of his closest assistants.

Among the attendees at St. Peter’s Square was French nun, Marie Simon-Pierre, whose recovery from Parkinson’s Disease was part of the case for the beatification, the last stage before sainthood.

“Thank you to all the young people. John Paul II who sees you from up there is happy!” Marie Simon-Pierre told the crowd.
She paid tribute to “a shepherd… who was closest to the weak, the sick and the young.”

The Vatican needs to certify a second miracle attributed to John Paul before he can be made a saint but has hinted this could happen soon.
