Bosnia 12th August 2010: Ongoing investigations by Bosnia’s International Commission for Missing Persons have led investigators to the discovery of a mass grave of around 50 remains believed to be victims of the Visegrad massacre of the 1992-1995 Bosnian war.

The Serb forces are believed to have killed more than 1,000 people in the town during an act of “Ethnic Cleansing” in the spring of 1992.

During the Hague tribunal investigations acts of genocide in the Bosnian war, judges described the Visegrad massacre as “one of the most comprehensive campaigns of ethnic cleansing in the Bosnian conflict”.

In 2009, Milan and Sredoje Lukic, two Bosnian Serb Commanders were found guilty of war crimes. Between 1992 and 1994 they were accused of persecution, extermination and other various inhumane acts which included burning of women, children and elderly men alive in the Visegrad region.

Visegrad and Lake Perucac is situated in what is now the self governing Bosnian Serb entity of Republika Srpska.

This is not the first time that the lake has revealed a gruesome discovery. A mass grave holding over 60 bodies was found in 2001 and the remains are thought to be of Kosovo Albanians who were killed during the 1999 conflict in Kosovo.
