LHC Xmas At Centara-Grand

The annual Gala Christmas Dinner for the Pattaya branch of the “Light House Club” (LHC) was held at the Centara Grand Resort Hotel, which is Pattaya’s newest mega sized holiday resort destination. This was the most lavish function that the LHC has held, and at only 1,500 baht per head, not only did the patrons make money, but this large charitable organization also raised a tidy sum for its well known charitable activities.

The Lighthouse Club was formed in England in 1956 by Edward Ward and his colleagues and the name “Lighthouse” came from St. Mary’s Lighthouse in Whitley Bay. The aim of the club was to promote the goodwill and co-operation between persons involved in the construction industry. The Lighthouse Club’s motto is “Allis Cum Humanitate”, which means “consideration for others”. In the beginning, the Lighthouse Club maintained a fund to help construction workers who were injured on the job, and their families, until insurance payments were finally received.

Over the years, this has expanded into other forms of charity related to construction and the Bangkok branch was established in 1991 when Nigel Pearson, a former member of the Hong Kong branch, persuaded 6 other prominent personalities of the Bangkok construction scene to combine efforts and create a branch membership. The inaugural Bangkok Lighthouse Club Dinner was held on 27th May 1992 and was attended by 110 members and guests, but he annual dinner grew in numbers, attracting nearly 600 members and guests in 1996. A second branch in Thailand, the Lighthouse Club Phuket has also been established and started meetings in May, 2006, then a third branch in Thailand, the Lighthouse Club Pattaya, was started in 2008. The first function had a turnout of 50 members, and the Lighthouse Club Pattaya always has sponsors for future functions, thanks to the hard work of its committee members, such as Tracy Cosgrove.

The Lighthouse Club Bangkok established its own Benevolent Fund in 1993, but a larger focus has been on the underprivileged construction workers’ children. A unique school has been constructed on the huge Rom Klao National Housing association site in Bangkok. This started during the construction of the new Suvarnabhumi international airport and this school now provides education and community services. Another school is funded to support the work of Father Joe, at the Chaeng Wattana School (previously named the Laksi School) and the Phuket branch is helping children found running around construction sites by sponsoring their attendance in school. Tracy Cosgrove has been a pioneer in helping to provide educational facilities for the children of workers on construction sites, and her philosophy of relocatable classrooms has been a real breakthrough for such children.

Tracy Cosgrove is a real powerhouse of energy, inspiration and will simply not take “no” for an answer when it comes to fundraising, with many sponsors having generously donated to this large charitable institution. On a regional basis the Light house Club (Asia Pacific) can boast of having over fifty very major international sponsors. After a very elegant cocktail reception at the Centarra-Grand Ballroom lobby, the one hundred plus guests proceeded to tne dining hall where a splendid Christmas banquet awaited them. Fine food, wine awaited them and congenial company made a perfect evening that was thoroughly enjoyed by those associated with the construction industry, plus invited guests. Membership of the Lighthouse Club Pattaya, is open to all who have the interests of children at heart, so you can find more general information on the Thai website of www.lighthousebkk.com or by contacting Pattaya’s branch Chairman, Mr. Cees Kuipers on 086.666.7238 ( E-mail kc@towncountryproperty.com)
