Israel Bombs Beirut Airport

Israel still upset about captured soldiers not being returned. Israeli warplanes bombed the runways of Beirut International airport in the Lebanese capital’s Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs.

The Bombing of the airport came on the heels of nearly 24 hours of concentrated bombings on the bridges linking south Lebanon with the rest of the country.

Police reported that the shells began to fall from the sky just after 6 a.m. local time on the eastern runways, as well as a road leading from the city.

Senior airport officials had to close the airport due to the bombings and divert all other flights to Cyprus’ airport.

The latest military action stems from the two Israeli soldiers that were recently captured trying to carry out a cross-border raid.

A statement issued by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s cabinet said that Israel holds the Lebanese government responsible for the attacks, as well as the safe return for the two captured soldiers.

“This kidnapping marks an escalation for the entire region. Israel will react in an appropriate fashion because it is obvious to the whole world that responsibility for this affair rests with the Lebanese government,” said Israeli cabinet minister Yitzhak Herzog.

The Lebanese P.M. Fouad Siniora claims he had no knowledge of the attacks and he does not endorse it or accept responsibility.
