He said he believed the road show could restore confidence among the 1,200 representatives of the Japanese business community who attended a seminar held under the auspices of the travelling exhibition.

According to the industry minister, the net effect of Thailand’s promotional investment helped boost Japanese understanding of the Thai political landscape and successfully conveyed that political life had returned to normal.

Mr. Charnchai said that the Thai government’s policy on driving the economy and welcoming foreign investment was effectively conveyed to the Japanese target audience. “It does not mean that more Japanese investors will come to Thailand soon after the trip because Japanese businesses have been affected by the global economic recession. They want to see the current world economy trends bottom out before they make any investment plan themselves,” he said.

“What the government has achieved in this road show is to build up confidence and inform investors of our efforts to create a welcoming investment climate.” Mr. Charnchai said. The process would “eliminate hindrances to investment to ensure (Thailand’s) readiness to welcome investment from Japan and other countries when the global economy recovers.”

Mr. Charnchai said the ministry would step up efforts to support and promote the food industry through cooperation with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). At the same time, he added, the ministry would liaise closely with JFE Steel and Nippon Steel, the world’s leading steelmakers, who continue to confirm their intention to invest in the upstream high-quality steel product project in Thailand.
