Pattaya, the 17th of January 2009 [Pattaya Daily News]: The Thai Polo & Equestrian Club of Pattaya did an excellent job of catering for these finals, which ran from 6th –16th January and are one of the foremost Polo tournaments in South East Asia. Once again they were generously sponsored by “Mercedes-Benz” cars and the “B.Grimm” company, which is the oldest one of its type in Thailand.

Their were four teams from Malaysia, consisting of the Royal Pahang Polo Club, – Malaysia RMPA Team, – Malaysia Bunga Raya team, – and Malaysia Jogo Elevation team.. The two Thailand teams were the Thai Polo Club Team, and the B Grimm Insead team, but the new “Harilela – The Next Level” team from Hong Kong, turned out to be the real surprise.

These National Polo teams competed for this highly prized Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Cup, and the “Harilela” team from Hong Kong showed a powerful lead at half time with a very convincing 6:1 lead. In the remaining two Chukkas (rounds) they increased their lead to eight goals, in spite of the best efforts of the “Jogo Elevation“ team. Experts believed that the Malaysian team played very well, but on several occasions were just very unlucky not to have made a few more points.

Hundreds of high-society visitors and enthusiastic Polo supporters traveled considerably long distances to attend this prestigious event, so a second set of pavilions, complete with buffet dining and beverage facilities were set up at the end of the Polo playing field. As usual the Polo playing & horsemanship were of a very high standard, with some of the riders in the final match choosing to change their mounts (horses) during the match.

After their win PDN interviewed the .Captain, Aron Harilela, who told us that his Harilela family were the main sponsors of the Harilela Team He stated – “I have been playing Polo for about seven years and regularly play Polo in Thailand, England and Argentina, but I like playing here in Thailand the best.” In spite of their unusual family names, all of the Harilela Team is of British extraction and this is the first time that they have played together. Aron went on to say, – “My other team members are all very experienced Polo players, so we are certain to keep this winning team together, but we expected to win by a few points, and were surprised that our winning margin was so large.”

The next day was Sunday 17th January, so the International Match between England & South East Asia was no less exciting, and this was held on the large adjacent playing field at Pattaya’s Thai Polo & Equestrian Club. Even though the Malaysian team was made up of very strong players, they were a little apprehensive about the abilities of the British team. In England Polo playing is a highly competitive sport, being somewhat of a national icon, so it was no real surprise when England beat South East Asian team with a 7:5 score.
