Hong Kong 22nd July 2010 [Pattaya] A Hong Kong tourist guide berated her group of mainland tourists for not spending enough at a jewelry store when they were dropped off for 30-45 minutes in part of their package deal has sent shock waves throughout the public. A fellow tourist filmed the incident and posted it on UTube which has come to the attention of TIC (travel industry council). The short video does not show much, but has recorded the ticking off that was given by the irate tour guide.

The travel company that was responsible for the tour, ‘Golden Win International Travel Services’ issued a statement through its’ deputy manager Chui Kam-Ming that the abusive tour guide who has been identified as ‘Jane’ was freelance hired by the company during peak seasons. He expressed deep regret and declared that the tour guide in mention will never again be hired by them. He went on to say the company will accommodate the tourists that were targeted in the outburst for free.

Chui went on to say the company regularly keeps a check on the conduct of their guides to ensure they abide by company rules and regulations of TIC and are at present making out a report for them welcoming any penalties that they may impose on the guide.

One tourist told reporters that during their 2009 trip, they were frequently dropped off at tourist souvenir shops which last around 30-45 minutes each place.  Sales people harassed and continuously tried to fleece them. This was part of the package due to the low prices to encourage more customers.  They traveled with around 20 other holiday makers and a handful of them usually bought something.  On visiting Wuxi, the staff got a little annoyed as only a small amount was purchased.

However, what was experienced on mainland China or Hong Kong cannot compare to this. The guide berated them for not buying enough at one of the stores.  One tourist from the group recorded the incident, but unless you understand Mandarin, you would not know what she said, but the tone of her voice is enough.

The tourist translated a small portion of the ticking off they had;

“The female tour guide shouted that there is no free lunch in the world, meaning that the 1,000-plus Yuan each visitor paid for the tour doesn’t even cover airline tickets, much less lodging and meals in Hong Kong.  She fussed at the tourists, saying, “I provide food and lodging for you, yet you won’t contribute. If you don’t pay me back in this life, you’ll still have to pay me back in your next life.”

When they stopped for 1.5 hours at a watch shop, the guide threatened that if the tourists didn’t buy more stuff, they would not get food or a hotel to stay in.

She also ridiculed the tourists, saying: “It’s fine if you are poor at home, but do not act like this when you’re out. You’re the ones who owe me! I don’t owe you anything!  Next we’re going to a watch store. Anybody got any objections?! … This stop isn’t just for window-shopping; you need to buy something. Don’t just go in and walk around. Just now you left the store before the allotted time was up. The other group spent 100,000-some Yuan and was still in there. We only spent about 10,000 and yet we came out before time was up.”

Golden Win International have a long history of complaints from mainland tourists for forced purchasing with four visitors from Henan Province claiming their return tickets were cancelled because they had refused to purchase items from the designated stores on tour.
