When ‘hassle-free’ tattooing perfect brows and lips goes horribly wrong

As she walked into the beauty salon, Sue Kilden had every reason to feel confident. She was there to have her eyebrows — sparse from years of over-zealous plucking — tattooed with ‘permanent’ make-up.

It was a treatment she’d undergone twice before, both times with impressively natural-looking results. This was a different practitioner to the one she’d used previously; one she’d turned to after finding a cut-price deal offering the treatment for £130 — rather than the usual £400 — on the voucher website Groupon. However, as the treatment progressed, Sue felt enough faith in the therapist, who works in Croydon, to allow herself to be talked into having permanent lipliner tattooed, too, for no extra cost.

The session was far more painful than usual, but it wasn’t until the end, when she saw the results in the mirror, that she realised she’d made a terrible mistake. Her eyebrows were black with a peculiar blue tinge — a world away from the light brown she’d wanted and which would have toned with her blonde hair.

But far more distressing were her lips, which were surrounded by a lopsided dark brown line that missed their natural shape entirely.
‘The moment I saw myself in the mirror, I thought: “What have I done?” and started crying,’ says Sue, 60, a retired NHS administrator from Farnborough, Kent.

‘My lips were horrendous. The lines were totally wonky. She’d missed a bit and my cupid’s bow was no longer in the middle. Worst of all, it was so dark that I knew I’d never be able to cover it with lipstick. I was absolutely devastated.’
