Gambling Purge Continues in Pattaya, 300k Arrest Made

Pattaya Tourism Police assisted in the apprehension of a football gambling dealer operating in the South Pattaya region. The arrest was made outside Pattaya’s IT City (Tukcom) building.

Pattaya, the 22nd of June 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: At approximately 00:30am on Tuesday, Lieutenant Colonel Arun Phromphan (Pattaya Tourism Police) along with an investigative team announced the successful apprehension of a large-scale football gambling dealing in front of IT City (Tukcom) in South Pattaya.

Mr. Jiraphan Sawatphab [35] from Bangkok, was arrested in possession of a variety of illegal football gambling materials including; 4 betting slips, Bt23,760 baht in cash and a Krung Thai Bank account slip detailing approximately Bt300,000 in circulated money from the 21st/22nd of June alone. Officers arrested Mr. Sawatphab and confiscated the aforementioned evidence along with the offender’s red-white Honda Scoopy motorbike.

Follow-up investigations revealed that Mr. Sawatphab was a major football gambling operator in the Pattaya region. The offender confessing to having propagated the illegal business in the area for several years, often taking bets of over Bt1,000 on single matches from regular customers and friends.

Lt. Col. Phromphan revealed that, along with the Police Volunteers, his division had been ordered to assist in the crackdown on football gambling in the region. Initiated in regards to the currently ongoing FIFA World Cup in South Africa, local police have netted over Bt500,000 in illegal gambling proceeds with Tuesday’s bust the largest to-date.

The Pattaya Tourist Police have now surrendered Mr. Phromphan into the custody of the Pattaya Police for further investigation. He will now be charged with operating an illegal gambling business before being remanded in police custody awaiting further judicial proceedings to commence.
