Chalermchai, who inspected the ministry’s prepareness to welcome Thai returnees from Libya at Suvarnabhumi airport, said that four ferries would be sent to pick up Thai citizens from Tripoli.

Each ferry could carry some 2,000 passengers, he said.

The minister said the Transport Ministry would be asked to coordinate with Thai Airways International (THAI) to charter airplanes for 10 flights to transport the Thais back home.

The most dangerous cities now were Tripoli and Benghazi as there were no reports of threatening situations from other cities in Libya, he said.

The first batch of 33 Thai labourers arrived home early Saturday from Libya, while another 12 are scheduled to return later in the day. However, only one additional worker has arrived at the airport.

The Labour and Foreign Ministries have reportedly chartered a 1,600-seat ferry from Italy which was scheduled to arrive Tripoli on Monday after 30 hours of sailing. The ferry would carry Thais workers to Italy and Tunisia for two trips totaling 3,200 passengers.

A assistance centre would be set up in Tunisia for sheltering Thais while the situation was evaluated in Libya. The Thai embassy in Tripoli would set up similar centres at Sabha in southern Libya and the Thai embassy in Cairo, Egypt would also set up a centre to help Thais.

It was estimated that 2,327 Thai workers were in Benghazi and surrounding areas, 6,018 Thai workers staying in Tripoli and adjacent areas while some 10,000 Thai resided in other cities in Libya.
