A cold snap sent thermometers plunging in South America in recent days, killing three people in Chile and Argentina while Buenos Aires saw snow on Monday for the first time in 89 years.

The National Weather Service even doubted to announce the predicted snowfall, because it is a phenomenon that occurs only about every hundred years.

For the thousands of people who took to the streets of Buenos Aires to celebrate Argentina’s Independence Day, the city’s first snowstorm since 1918 was another reason to celebrate.

But while they cheered in the streets, government ministers were already appealing to consumers to conserve energy.

This is Argentina’s second unseasonal cold snap in 2 months.

Authorities are now keeping close tabs on the energy system and meteorologists are predicting the cold snap to continue until the end of the week.
