FALLING BRICKS FROM CONSTRUCTION PROJECT CAUSE INJURIES AND DAMAGES

Local residents complained to police about damage and injuries caused by falling bricks from the seventh floor of a condo, under construction, onto a house. Two people sustained serious injuries. Police Lieutenant Colonel Sanae Yotroongreung, from the Pattaya Police Station, received a complaint on 18 December 2007, at 11am, from Mr. Mongkol Yoti (47), residing at 27/56 Moo 10, South Pattaya, that cement blocks from the seventh floor of “City Garden Pattaya Condominium” had fallen onto his roof, causing serious damage. Two people were injured, as well.

Police rushed to the single story house, which contains two bedrooms and a kitchen and has a tile roof. There was extensive damage to Mr. Mongkol’s furniture from the approximately fifty brick blocks that were still lying on the floor and roof. Two residents were seriously injured and were sent to the hospital. They were Mr. Wanchana Yoti (19), who was hit by several of the bricks, causing multiple injuries; and Mr. Paaw Som-ngahm (52) who was also seriously injured.

Mr. Wanchana, who rents the house, lives with five relatives. They have been living in the area, uneventfully, for quite awhile. However, since construction started on the eight floor “City Gardens Pattaya” project eight months ago, on Soi 15, off Pattaya Second Road, behind Mr. Wanchana’s house, there have been continuous problems and mishaps. The pounding of the foundation’s pilings was a disturbance of the neighborhood’s peace and tranquility. Remnants of iron and scraps of wood continuously fall onto people’s houses. This is not the first time that bricks have fallen onto Mr. Wanchana’s house. On a previous occasion, the construction company agreed to pay 10,000 baht for damages. However, they have yet to make good on their obligation.

Once again, the area has been victimized by unsafe conditions. The police have investigated the site and have insisted that the compnay solve the problems and pay for damages. Mr. Wanchana and his neighbors have requested that reporters covering this story serve as witnesses to the construction company’s promises. They also plan to lodge a complaint with the Mayor of Pattaya City if the company doesn’t get serious about preventing damage and injuries from their construction project.
