European Champions to Play Thai All-Stars in Bangkok

Reigning Europa League champions Atletico Madrid will play a Bangkok friendly match, in preparation for the impending start of the La Liga in Spain, on Sunday. The match will be contested by a Thai Premier League all-star side.

Bangkok, the 27th of July 2010: Atletico Madrid, known as the Atleti or Colchoneros (mattress makers) will visit Bangkok to play in what is being heralded as an exhibition match at the Rajamangala National Stadium on Sunday.

Despite the likely absences of star players, Diego Forlan, Sergio Aguero and Simao Sabrosa from the match, due to an extended break following the World Cup, the match promises to be a spectacle for all football enthusiasts. A host of other notable Atleti stars will attend the match including the likes of, De Gea, Dominguez, Mario Suarez, Fran Merida, Reyes, Salvio and Diego Costa.

Thailand’s Premier League (TPL) all-star line-up is yet to be completely confirmed the squad will inevitably include Anon Sangsanoi (Thai), Dagno Siaka (Ivorian), Piyachart Tamaphan (Thai) and  veteran Therdsak Chaiman (Thai), who have been outstanding in recent performances for their TPL clubs.

Atletico were founded in 1903 and are still arguably the third most successful club in Spanish footballing history. Despite only having won the La Liga title once in the past 30 years (1995-96 season), Atletico have won the coveted trophy on 8 other occasions. Also in the trophy cabinet are, 9 Spanish Cups, 3 Spanish Super Cups, 1 Intercontinental Cup, 1 Cup Winners Cup and their 2010 Europa League title.

At present, the third most supported team in Spanish football, with fan clubs in some 22 foreign countries including Thailand, is coached by renowned tactician Quique Sanchez Flores. Prior to his appointment with the Atleti, Quique Flores managed at Real Madrid (youth team), Getafe, Valencia and the Portuguese outfit of Benfica.
