Pattaya, the 10th of May 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: In coalition with the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA) representatives from 9 Pattaya city administrations met to discuss the final proposal for the new ‘Green Innovation’ scheme being considered for the region.

The projects aim is to considerably focus the collective efforts of Pattaya City into taking better care of the environment to ensure a sustainable future whilst maintaining an emphasis on local traditions, culture and the rich heritage of the region.

This most recent meeting was the last stage before the project will be given the green light, having been under negotiations since May of 2008. The Pattaya city Mayor Itthiphol Khunpluem revealed his delight at the creation of the project, stating that it would be of great use to the local population who would benefit for the increase in their quality of life in addition to the positive economic, social and environmental impact that the scheme will provide for the region.

In further Pattaya development news, Mayor Khunpluem chaired a meeting between the Pattaya City Development Board on Tuesday; the main topic on the committee’s agenda was to approve a 10 year development stratergy for the area. The stratergy would be undertaken in three separate stages; 3 years (2011-2013), 5 years (2011-2015) and 10 years (2011-2020).

The meeting, held at Pattaya City Hall, included various members from local administrations and public organisations who gathered to listen to the speech of a development consultant, Mrs Wanida Nuanboonrueng. Mrs. Nuanboonrueng explained the need for Pattaya to create a suitable and obtainable development plan to lead the city into the future. Modernisation was one of the key issues focused on in her lecture which emphasised the need to promote Pattaya as a modern, ‘trendy’ tourism hub of Thailand.

Another major issue discussed at the meeting was the regeneration of Pattaya and Jomtien beaches, specifically Pattaya beach. A budget of Bt16 million baht has been allocated for the development project which will see the recreational space available on the beach increased through greater restrictions on beach bed operators and an ambitious plan to artificially increase the size of the beach. One development strategy being mention at present includes using sand bags to support the relocation of mass quantities of sand from offshore, creating a larger beach area that would not disappear at high tide. The regeneration of Pattaya beach was considered one of the key projects to be included within the previously discussed 3 year development plan.
