Elephant Crushes Construction Worker Severely Injuring Him

A male construction worker who was hired by Nong Nooch Tropical Gardens, Pattaya, to construct a new elephant theatre inside the gardens was crushed by an elephant severely injuring him. He was sent to Chonburi hospital for treatment. He has been in hospital for several months but nobody has taken responsible for the accident.

CHONBURI – February 17, 2014 [Pattaya Daily News]; at 3.00 p.m. at Chonburi hospital, Mr. Somphong Sa-kaew [Director of Labor Right Promotion Network Foundation (LPN)] went to visit Mr. Meu, aged 33, who is the Karen construction worker of Boris Construction Co., Ltd. that was hired to construct for Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Amphur Sattahip, but on the 30th December 2013 he was crushed violently by an elephant from Nong Nooch while he was walking to buy alcohol.
This incident took place near the workers camp and he was sent to Chonburi hospital for urgent treatment due to his pelvis was fractured he had also suffered a dislocated vertebral , torn bladder and was bleeding in his lung.

Afterwards Mr. Somphong went to see Dr. Assada Teeyaphan (Director of Chonburi hospital) about the treatment which Dr. Assada said that hospital will treat Mr. Meu until he recovers. But the company that Mr. Meu works for didn’t express any responsibility to pay for his treatment which is up to 161,474 THB so far. The hospital had asked for assistance from the Labour Right Promotion Network Foundation (LPN) to take care of the treatment expenses for Mr. Meu and send him back home.

Mr. Somphong Sa-Kaew [Director of Labor Right Promotion Network Foundation (LPN)] said that previously he tried to coordinate with Boris Co., Ltd. and Nong Nooch Tropical Garden but there was no assistance from them and he knew that Chonburi hospital had coordinated with Nong Nooch Tropical Garden 3 times but the officers told the hospital that no such incident had taken place. Upon questioning Mr. Meu and his friends they told Mr. Somphong that they are construction workers and had been working there for over 2 years. Mr. Somphong said that LPN foundation sees clearly that many relevant parties have ignored responsibility without recognizing the humanitarian rights.
