Michelle Palmer and Vince Acors received three-month jail sentences, a fine and deportation orders after being convicted of having sex outside marriage and indecency. Both sides have now launched appeals – the prosecutors to have the sentences toughened and the defence to have them quashed.

Defence lawyer Hassan Matter, who represents Palmer, 36, and Acors, 34, said: “They say three months is not enough. They say it should be longer.”

At the time of the trial, senior prosecutor Faisal Abdelmalek Ahli said he was disappointed and would have preferred jail terms of six to 12 months.

Mr Matter lodged the couple’s appeal last week and both cases will be heard on November 18. The pair are currently on bail but forbidden to leave the country.

At her trial, Ms Palmer, from Oakham, Rutland, said she was just “kissing and hugging” Mr Acors, from Bromley, not having sex with him.

They met at a boozy brunch on July 4 and a policeman said he saw them having sex on Jumeirah beach in the early hours of the following morning. He said he warned them but they carried on.

Dubai’s Court of First Instance found them guilty of the charges on October 16. In addition to three months in jail, the pair are set to be deported after their release and have had to pay a fine of 1,000 dirhams (£155).

The Gulf Emirate state of Dubai is popular with British tourists but still upholds strict Islamic principles and sex outside marriage is forbidden.
