On November 5 2008 at 11.00 am. Police Major Suriya Wariwong was informed that a police officer had shot himself in an office on the second floor of Pattaya police station. He notified Pattaya Superintendent Pol. Col. Noppadol Wongnorm and Deputy Superintendent Pol. Lt. Col. Supachuch Piammanus, before rushing to where the incident occurred.

At the scene, the body of Sergeant Tawan Wannasawang (54) was lying on the floor in a pool of his own blood. A 9 mm. Baretta pistol had fallen on the floor next to his body. There were 5 bullets in the magazine and one bullet case was on the floor. Police took them and the gun as evidence. Police immediately rushed the victim to Pattaya Memorial Hospital where doctors tried to save his life but sadly he died in the presence of friends and his wife.

A colleague of Sergeant Tawan’s said he had come to work on time as usual. Later on he had a long conversation on the phone and he became very quiet and looked serious. He walked back to his desk and without warning pulled out a gun and shot himself in the head. He fell down on the floor in front of his friends who could not manage to stop him.

Mrs. Somjit, his wife (44) was crying and told police that her husband had breakfast with her and did not say anything unusual or show any signs of worry. He had not told her much about work. She was shocked when she had a phone call from his friend that he had killed himself.

Pol. Col. Noppadol Wongnorm revealed that Sergeant Tawan had worked at Pattaya Police station since 1992 and his present salary was 21,520 baht a month. He had outstanding debts totalling about 400-500 thousand baht and he was applying for a loan from the office but the stress must have been too much and he decided to take his life.
