Pattaya, the 9th of March 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: At approximately 11:30am on Tuesday, police Lieutenant Colonel Kamol Thaveesri (Banglamung Police Investigator) was notified of a gold snatching in Soi Prapanimitr, Banglamung. The offender had allegedly escaped into the nearby Pornprapanimitr Village leaving his motorbike and shirt behind at the scene.

Arriving at the scene officer were confronted by Mr. Saroj Suwanlamai [40] the victim of the gold snatch. In the vicinity was the damaged Honda Wave motorbike which had been left behind by the offender. Mr. Suwanlamai was still in possession of half of the necklace which had been stolen from him, as it had broken in two places during the snatch. In a statement made to police, Mr. Suwanlamai explained that he had been walking home when a Thai male, dressed in a black shirt and jeans rode past on his motorbike, snatching at his gold necklace. The man subsequently crashed the bike as a result of the incident, proceeding to remove his shirt and run into the nearby Pornprapanimitr Village.

Banglamung police along with a team of volunteers surrounded the village whilst a search was conducted in an attempt to apprehend the offender. Remarkably, police managed to locate and arrest the suspect, Mr. Supat Tharnbaurisut [28] after he had attempted to break into a house in the village. He was apprehended at the residence when he fell through the roof tiles onto the concrete floor below, injuring his ankle in the process.

In possession of the other half of Mr. Suwanlamai’s necklace, Mr. Tharnbaurisut confessed to police that he was a motorbike taxi rider from Naklua. He further stated that he was committing the crime for the first time as he desperately needed money to pay two outstanding motorbike repayments. Mr. Tharnbaurisut also admitted to having been arrested for drugs on two previous occasions.

Investigating officers stated that they were reluctant to believe the offender’s story as it was an all too common excuse. Mr. Tharnbaurisut has now been arrested and will be remanded in police custody awaiting further judicial proceedings to commence.
