Nongbualamphu, the 22nd of September 2010: On Wednesday, Major General Suphan Prasertsom (Nongbualamphu Police Commander) headed an investigation into the attempted robbery of a Krung Thai ATM at the “Thaijerern Yamaha Square” motorbike shop in Nongbualamphu.

Officers described how the offender had gained access to the motorbike shop through a rear ventilation grill before attempted to use gas-cutting equipment to gain access to the rear safe of the Krung Thai ATM located at the front of the store. During the incident, the offender had successfully cut three large holes in the side of the machine but had emptied the gas bottle used to cut through the metal and as such is thought to have abandoning the tools before fleeing the scene.

Allegedly, a warning alarm on the machine had been sounded at approximately 2:00am, but no report of any follow-up by the relevant operators was found. A representative of the Krung Thai Bank has since announced an examination of the incident will take place by the bank, stating that there was approximately Bt3.5 million in the machine at the time of the attempted robbery.

Reviewing surveillance footage, officers observed the male offender, approximately 180cm in height, wearing dark clothing and a balaclava, walking through the store at the time of the attempted robbery. In addition, while police were interrogating the local residents of the area, a witness explained that he had seen a man exit a blue Nissan pickup and carry equipment into the shop on the night of the incident. The man had suspected criminal activity, noting the pickups registration, which he has provided to police.

Subsequently, officers were able to trace the registration of the vehicle to a Mr. Albareto (full name unknown), a German national, living in a house at Sribunrueng, Nongbualamphu. Proceeding to the location officers successfully apprehended the suspect, who had initially tried to escape. Also confiscated in the arrest were the blue Nissan pickup and numerous other equipments thought to have been used in the attempted robbery.

Under interrogation, Mr. Albareto confessed to the attempted robbery, explaining that he had been trying to steal the money in order to purchase a flight back to Germany. Reportedly, Mr. Albareto had come to Thailand approximately 3-months ago in order to be reunited with his Thai girlfriend who he had fallen in love with while she was working in Germany.

He explained that his girlfriend had been sent back to Thailand this year, at which point he used his savings as a labourer in Germany to fly to the Kingdom in order to be with her. He explained that he had recently run out of money, forcing him into this desperate measure. Allegedly, his girlfriend had been the one who drove him to the scene on the night of the attempted robbery.

Officers investigating the case have performed a re-enactment of the attempted robbery, as is customary in Thai police proceedings, and will now attempt to locate and apprehend Mr. Albareto’s girlfriend for questioning over the incident. Mr. Albareto has been remanded in custody.
